Meter Exchanges

Consistent with Measurement Canada requirements, Pacific Northern Gas replaces natural gas meters at homes and businesses from a select range of customers each year as part of our regular maintenance program. We do this to ensure your natural gas meter continues to be accurate, safe and reliable.

Exchanging your meter will take about 15 minutes from start to finish. To do the exchange, your natural gas service will be shut off temporarily so our technician can safely do the work. Your natural gas appliances, will then need to be relit after the exchange. A technician can relight your appliances for you, but if you’re not comfortable having a technician enter your home, they can provide general guidance if you wish to complete the relights yourself.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

When our technician arrives, they will:

  • take the last reading on your current meter
  • shut off the natural gas supply to the existing meter
  • remove the meter
  • put the new meter on
  • take a new reading
  • turn the gas back on
  • relight your natural gas appliances, or provide guidance as needed if you prefer to relight your appliances yourself (unless you have self-igniting appliances).

COVID-19 Safety Protocols

During the COVID-19 pandemic, PNG is following all provincial health and safety protocols. Technicians entering homes will wear personal protection equipment including masks, eye and hand protection. Prior to conducting the exchange our technicians will ask you a number of questions to understand if you’re experiencing any symptoms or if you’re in quarantine, so we can take the necessary precautions which may include rescheduling.
