PNG Conducting Work Upstream from Prince Rupert and Port Edward

September 12, 2024

In order to ensure the continued safety and reliability of our system, Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. (PNG) is conducting a planned geohazard mitigation project near Highway 16 Milepost 306, located approximately 55 kilometres upstream from Prince Rupert.

The scheduled maintenance will take place on September 14, 2024. There will be no service disruptions to customers, including in the Prince Rupert and Port Edward areas.

To conduct the planned project, PNG will be isolating the system and lowering the pressure of our existing line. During this period, PNG will serve customers with natural gas within the system once isolated, also known as line pack.

As part of this work, we will be safely releasing a very small amount of natural gas. For safety reasons, a harmless odourant is added to natural gas to give it the smell of rotten eggs. This bad smell is there to alert people that natural gas is present. If you are near the area of Milepost 311, you may smell gas while we complete this work. There is no risk to the community during this time. However, PNG investigates potential gas leak reports made by members of the public, and we are available to respond 24/7.

Regular gas supply will resume by the evening of September 14, 2024.

PNG’s top priority is the safety of the communities in which we operate, our customers and our people. Thank you for your understanding as we complete this important safety work.
