PNG Responds to Planned April 1 Carbon Tax Repeal

March 26, 2025

This week, the Government of British Columbia announced plans to introduce legislation on March 31, 2025, to repeal the consumer carbon tax, effective April 1. The Province has also advised fuel sellers and natural gas retailers to “make every effort” to ensure customers are not charged the tax on purchases made after March 31.

As an energy provider, per the Carbon Tax Act, PNG collects the tax—which currently applies to individuals, businesses and institutions that purchase fossil fuels in B.C.—and remits the funds directly to the provincial government.

Currently, the carbon tax on natural gas is $3.9859 per gigajoule (GJ) and $4.8371 per gigajoule of propane. If the legislation passes, effective April 1, PNG residential customers would see the following approximate average monthly savings on the taxes and other charges portion of their bill:

  • PNG West: -$22, based on 5.5 GJ average monthly consumption
  • Fort St. John: -$33, based on 8.2 GJ average monthly consumption
  • Dawson Creek: -$31, based on 7.7 GJ average monthly consumption
  • Tumbler Ridge: -$24, based on 6.0 GJ average monthly consumption
  • Granisle: -$15, based on 3.0 GJ average monthly consumption

Individual bill impacts will vary based on household usage.

In anticipation of the legislation passing, PNG is preparing to implement this change as quickly as possible. We will provide further updates as they become known. Until the Province passes the law being introduced on March 31, PNG remains obligated to collect the carbon tax from consumers.
