Terrace, October 4, 2024, 6:45pm
At about 12:45 pm yesterday, approximately 40 kilometres upstream of Kitimat, a logging truck heading north on the Kitimat Highway (Highway 37) rolled over. The logs carried on the truck subsequently struck the Pacific Northern Gas Ltd. (PNG) Mount Layton Hot Springs Station, causing a gas leak and gas infrastructure damage, resulting in service disruption to ~95 customers in the area. At this time, the risk of further impacts to more customers remains very low.
PNG Customer Service Technicians are now conducting relights and restoring gas service for affected customers so that they can enjoy the comforts of heat, hot water and their other gas appliances. These customers can also call PNG at 1-800-667-2297 to request a relight if a crew member has not yet visited their area.
All PNG employees and contractors carry photo identification issued by PNG. PNG encourages customers to ask for ID before allowing a PNG technician to enter their home, and to refuse entry if the technician cannot produce company-issued ID.
While interim repairs are being made, these customers will be served with Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). LNG is a safe energy source that PNG regularly deploys on an as-needed basis to maintain, or restore, service to customers.
Further traffic impacts may occur over the next several days as the accident site is fully recovered and gas infrastructure repairs are made. Residents may see LNG staged in their local area until PNG can resume regular natural gas supply, and crews working along on the roadside.
Public and employee safety, and reliability of service, are PNG’s top priorities. This is a dynamic situation, and the impacts and repair period duration depend on multiple factors including onsite safety considerations and the extent of gas infrastructure damage.
PNG will provide updates as more information becomes available. For more information about PNG’s emergency preparedness and response, or for all incident updates, please visit the PNG website at www.png.ca.
PNG thanks impacted customers for their patience and understanding during the gas service outage.
